Rivera explodes onto Gomez and then takes him down to his guard. Gomez is able to escape and they both stand up.
Round Two
This round was all standup, a good mix of leg kicks and body shots from both combatants. Round ends with Rivera throwing a flying knee, no damage.
Round Three
Mostly standup again in this round, a few attempted take downs early in the round both seemed content with letting it go to the judges for scoring.

Round One
They tie up and Magakian tries a hip toss and misses. They both land on all fours and Lucambio takes Magakian’s back. Lucambio is too high on his back. As he falls off, he tries for an arm bar, and misses. They are both on the ground in a heap of twisted arms and legs trading leg locks. Magakian finally turns for a knee bar and gets the tap.

Silva comes out strong early. Orr seems a little tentative. Silva starts head bobbing and taunting Orr, trying to get him to participate in the fight. From the clinch, Silva leg trips Orr and falls into half guard. Orr rolls and gets guard. Orr rotates his hip for an arm bar. Silva picks him up and slams him. Both fighters stand up. Orr is able to take down Silva two more times, but each time Silva is able to stand up. From the clinch Orr is able to take Silva’s back standing, Silva locks in a kimura while standing and takes down Orr and lands in half guard. Orr is able to work a sweep from butterfly guard and stands up. A few more take downs and escapes and Orr takes a knee to the groin. The ref separates them, and then the fight continues.

Both fighters stance before the bell, indicates they are going to charge out like bulls; nope, they walk to the center and touch gloves. Cooper knocks down Cronin and is standing over him in the open guard throwing punches. Cooper backs off and motions for Cronin to stand up, the ref gets between them and tells Cronin to stand. When Cronin stands, the ref stops the fight to look at a cut, the Doctor is summoned and the fight is stopped. Cut to the right eyebrow.

‘Superfly’ Matt Major, Blue, 184.5lbs.
Jamie Fletcher, Red, 183.5lbs.
Round One
Major starts with a right leg kick. Mostly standing the whole round. A couple of take down attempts by Fletcher. A good mix of punches and kicks. Most of the round was spent in the clinch. Most exciting part of the round was when Major lost his mouth piece.
Round Two
Fletcher comes out a little more aggressively with leg kicks. Major loses his mouth piece again and continues to grab the fence. I am a little surprised the ref hasn’t warned him yet.
Round Three
Major does a couple of spinning back kicks. Looked pretty. Fletcher takes down Major, but Major is able to stand back up again. Fight ends with a take -down, fighters are on their knees in a north/south position.

Fight 6
Alvin Cacdac, Blue,140lbs.
Chad ‘The Savage’ George, Red, 138lbs.
Round One
Cacdac takes down George and gets him in a guillotine in the full mount. George is able to reverse him and in the scramble they wind up north/south on their knees. George is able to put Cacdac on his back and pass to side control, and does a good job of controlling him from side control because George refuses to let go of the guillotine. They reverse each other back and forth a few times and Cacdac gets caught in a triangle set up. He is able to escape and winds up in George’s guard. The round ends with one more take down and George is fully mounted on Cacdac.
Round Two
They clinch against the fence and Cacdac is able to trip George and falls into the open guard. Neither one of them improve their positions so the ref stands them up. Cacdac throws a head kick, stumbles and falls with George on top of him. George passes to side control. Cacdac reverses but George is able to get a guillotine from the bottom. Cacdac pops his head out and starts to do a little ground and pound.
Round Three
Fighters come out and give a two handed high five and George kicks Cacdac in the balls, Ref stops it and gives Cacdac a chance to recover. Cacdac is able to take down George, but it is quickly reversed. They move in and out of half guard, butterfly guard and side control. George is able to take Cacdac’s back. Fight ends with Cacdac defending a rear naked choke.

Georgi ‘Insane’ Karakhanyan, Red
Round One
Lots of clinching against the fence. Karakhanyan takes down Rios to side control. Positions get reversed a couple of times, Rios takes Karakhanyan’s back, but is riding too high and gets shook off, both stand up.
Round Two
Karakhanyan throws a flying knee, catches Rios in the head but he is ok. Lot more clinching against the fence. Karakhanyan shoots for a single and executes a text book take down. Probably the best take down of the night. A little ground and pound, nothing really getting through, ref stands them up.
Round Three
Even more clinching against the fence, ref gets tired of it, separates them and has them re-start in the center of the ring. Karakhanyan takes down Rios and starts delivering knees while on the ground. Rios escapes and they both stand up. Round ends after one more take down by Karakanyan.

Round One
Early in the fight, Grear gets poked in the eye, ref stops the fight to look at it. Everything ok. Sandez lands a knee to Grear, Grear goes down. Sandez administer’s some ground and pound while in Grear’s half guard. Looks like Grear is ok and pulls Sandez close to avoid punches. Grear is able to escape and get to his feet. Grear takes down Sandez and is standing over him while Sandez is on his back when the bell rings.
Round Two
Grear is throwing unanswered leg kicks. Sandez spent most the round stalking Grear, no ground work.
Round Three
Sandez is still stalking Grear. Sandez throws a head kick, slips and falls, Grear standing over him delivering leg kicks while Sandez is on his back. After a scramble, both fighters stand. From the clinch, Grear takes down Sandez with a double leg and then stands over him, but doesn’t capitalize on his own take down.

Fight was mostly clinching against the fence. At some point Darabedyan got a cut and the Doctor stopped the fight after the first round ended.

Ford throws a left head kick and misses, spins around and hits the mat on his right shoulder. Pruder jumps on him, but it is apparent that Ford is done and the ref steps in and stops the fight. After the fight Pruder starts taunting Ford in the cage. His poor sportsmanship and trash talk, pisses off the crowd and they boo him so loudly that while being interviewed you could not hear him.

Brian ‘Mr. Unbreakable’ Warren, Blue, 170lbs.
Tiki Ghosn, Red, 170lbs.
Round One
Tiki forces Warren against the fence and takes him down to his guard. He doesn’t improve his position so the ref stands them up. Tiki gets another takedown and gets caught in a guillotine on the way down, but gets out.
Round Two
Warren comes out with a pair of spinning back kicks, one lands, one misses. Tiki gets another takedown, passes and then gets Warren’s back. Warren is able to get his shoulders to the mat and avoid the choke. Tiki gets another double leg and passes to side control.
Round Three
More of the same.

Jason ‘The Punisher’ Lambert, Blue, 205lbs.
Vladimir ‘The Janitor’ Matyushenko, Red
Round One
Lot of clinching against the fence. Matyushenko slips and Lambert falls on top of him into his guard. Passes back and forth between full and half guard. Ref stands them up. Bell rings.
Round Two
Matyushenko shoots for a double leg take down and gets caught in Lambert’s guillotine but is able to escape. Matyushenko takes down Lambert, but doesn’t improve his position so the ref stands them up, again.
Round Three
Lambert presses Matyushenko against the fence and is able to take him down with a double leg. Lambert does a good job with some ground and pound while in Matyushenko’s half guard. Matyushenko is able to escape and go directly to a double leg take down of his own and passes to side control. Lambert is able to get back to his feet only to be taken down again by Matyushenko. Fight ends with Matyushenko in side control.

Kyle Maynard

Kyle Maynard, a congenital amputee who has amazed and inspired people by his remarkable success in wrestling and submission wrestling, tested his tremendous will in the MMA arena on Saturday.

I found the fight on youtube and I must say that it was hard to watch. Maynard's opponent was able to keep him away by pusing his head away and throwing a punch here and there and prevent him from executing any sort of effective offense.

Kyle has stated on Sherdog Radio that he wants to continue to compete in MMA, and more power to him if that's what he really wants to do. But this fight illustrated one of the major differences between MMA and wrestling and why he will not find success in MMA and that is the striking. Although I am truely impressed by his heart and determination, he will simply continue to lose. He has the right to get his face smashed in as much as anyone, but he just does not have to tools to win in MMA. I wish Kyle continued success in submission wrestling tournaments.

First fight: Anthony “A-Train” Appello, 238 lbs. vs. Many “Bam Bam” Lara, 237lbs
Lara enters to Mariachi music. Bell rings and they touch gloves. Clinch and move to the ropes. Lara reaches down for a single leg and takes down Appello and hits the ground in side-control. Lara mounts but Appello rolls to the side and Lara gives up the mount for side control again. Appello is able to get into half guard but then rolls to his stomach to avoid Lara’s ground and pound. Lara takes his back but doesn’t put in the hooks so Appello rolls back to his back. Lara turns on the ground and pound and the ref stops the fight at 2:24 of the first round.

Second fight: Darby “The Edge” Faulkner, 146lbs. vs. Scott “The Sza” Brommage 144lbs.
Faulkner shoots but Brommage catches him in a standing guillotine. Faulkner finishes the take down and they hit the mat. Faulkner defends the guillotine while in Brommage’s full guard. Faulkner sinks his own guillotine on Brommage while still stuck in his guard. They are both in guillotines, very odd. They roll over and escape each other’s guillotines with Brommage now on top. Brommage starts some ground and pound and gets caught in a pretty deep arm bar from Faulkner’s back. Brommage picks up Faullkner and drops him on his head to escape the arm bar. They both stand up and do a little boxing. Faulkner throws a right and Brommage falls down. As Faulkner rushes in Brommage tries for a guillotine. End of round 1

Second round starts trading leg kicks. Faulkner shoots and winds up in a north-south guillotine. They stand up and Faulkner is knocked down to his knees. Brommage is standing over Faulkner delivering ground and pound till the ref stops the fight at 1:18 of the second round.

Third fight: Juan Rivas, 143lbs. vs. Andrew “Mon Chi Chi” Patlan, 144lbs.
Patlan starts the fight with a right leg kick. The fighters clinch against the ropes then break free. There is a flury of punches and Patlan falls with Rivas on his back, no hooks. Rivas begins to ground and pound and knees to the body. The Ref moves the fight to the center of the ring with Rivas still on top. Patlan escapes and both fighters are on their feet. The round ends with Patlan grabbing Rivas’s kick to the body.

Second round Patlan shoots and finishes a single leg. Rivas lands on his back with Patlan in his guard. Patlan tries to pass and they move back and forth between full and half guard. Rivas tries for a gogoplata but eventually has his guard passed. Patlan takes Rivas’s back and starts to punch Rivas in the side of the head, moves to mount and continues to ground and pound. After a scramble, the bell rings signaling the end of round two.

Third round started trading kicks. Patlan shoots for a double leg and gets caught in a standing guillotine. He finishes the takedown and escapes the guillotine. Patlan passes and as Rivas rolls over giving up his back. Patlan does not capitalize and Rivas escapes now standing over Patlan, who is on his back. Rivas kicks at Patlan’s legs a few times and then jumps on him. No damage, bell rings. End of fight.

Fourth fight: Fabian “Wolverine” Diaz, 150lbs. vs. Sgt. Vince Ortiz (USMC) 148lbs.
A little feeling out at first. Ortiz clinches with Diaz and throws some knees in close. Diaz responds with knees of his own, and Ortiz takes one to the tenders. Ref steps in and lets Ortiz recover. After the break they go right back to the clinch and start kneeing each other again. Diaz is able to get a standing guillotine but is taken down by Ortiz who then escapes the guillotine. There is a scramble for position and Ortiz takes Diaz’s back. Ortiz fights for the choke while Diaz does a good job defending, at first. Ortiz stays with the dominate position and finally gets the RNC. Diaz taps at 2:48 of the 1st round.

Fifth fight: Lamar “Monster” Jiles 202lbs. vs. Keneti “Monsta” Faagata 204lbs.
Monsta starts with some body-kicks. Monster clinches and then takes down Monsta. Monster falls into Monsta’s guard. Monster passes to side control and receives some elbows from the bottom. Monster achieves the mount and sets the hooks. He does a good job of maintaining the mount and administeing some ground and pound, moving back and forth from hooks in, to sitting up and delivering blows. Ref. Herzog steps in and stops the fight, TKO. Red corner wins 2:59 first round.

Sixth fight: Fernando Bettega, 179lbs. vs. John “VooDoo” Walsh.
Walsh clinches with Bettega and takes him down. Bettega is able to get half-guard for a moment but is eventually mounted by Walsh. Bettega takes a few shots on bottom and rolls giving up his back. Bettega is able to escape the back mount, reverses Walsh and sets a guillotine. They stand up and Walsh takes him down again, still with his head in a guillotine. Bettega hangs on tight and lands on his back with Walsh in his guard and a deep guillotine on his neck. Bettega chokes out Walsh. Tap out 1:23 first round.

Seventh fight: Darrell “The Mongoose” Montague, 129lbs. vs. Maurice “Syko” Eazel, 129lbs.
Montague entered the ring with a blue belt wraped around his Gi to the music, Sade “Smooth Operator”. Hmmm. Eazel came with gifts and tossed red “Hitman” hats to the audience. OK, the fight. Eazel shoots for a double leg and lands in Montague’s guard. Montague is able to get to his feet but is taken down again, back to full guard. He escapes again and gets a standing guillotine on Eazel. Eazel executes a spectacular feet over head take down of Montegue and lands in side control. Montague is able to obtain guard and then stands up. He throws a flying knee and then clinches with Eazel. Montague takes down Eazel to his half guard. Eazel is able to get back to his feet and a flurry of punches ensues. The round ends in a clinch.

Second round starts with Eazel delivering kicks and knees to the body of Montague. In the clinch, Montague is knocked down by a right hand. In the scramble for position, Eazel winds up in Montague’s guard. Eazel does a little ground and pound and the bell rings.

In the third round, this time Montague knocks down Eazel. Eazel gets up only to receive a flying knee to the head. Montague finishes Eazel with a little ground and pound before the Ref steps in. Montague wins by KO at 36 seconds of the third round.
Paramedics, with a stretcher, were summoned to assist, however, Eazel was able to walk away under his own power.

Eighth fight: Scott Rose, 181lbs. vs. Tarec Saffiedine, 177lbs.
Rose starts with kicks. Saffiedine lands a left that rocks Rose. In the clinch, Saffiedine forces Rose out of the ring. On the restart, Rose pulls guard. Saffiedine passes to half guard and sets up a head and arm triangle, steps out of half guard and gets the tap. Saffiedine wins by tap out at 58 seconds of the first round.

Ninth fight: Erik Meaders vs. Thomas Kenney, 167lbs.
Kenney shoots but the shot is defended by Meaders. They clinch for a moment and then separate to do little boxing. Meaders shoots and Kenney grabs a guillotine and pulls guard. Meaders gets out of the guillotine and throws punches from inside Kenney’s guard. Meaders stands up and Kenney is still on his back. Meaders throws a few leg kicks to the downed Kenney before the Ref. stands it up. Kenney delivers some leg kicks and the round ends.

Kenney starts the second round the way he ended the first round, with leg kicks. Kenney shoots and gets caught in a guillotine and half guard. Kenney defends the guillotine and mounts Meaders who rolls and gives his back to Kenney. Meaders rolls to his back and is remounted. Kenney is working on a head and arm triangle when the bell rings.

Third round, Kenney shoots and takes Meaders down only to get caught in a crucifix. He escapes, shoots again for a double and passes to side control. He is able to start a kimura on Meaders left arm but Meaders is able to get half guard and stuff his own arm behind his back preventing the finish. Meaders reverses Kenney and is working for a guillotine when the bell rings.

Dana White Debacle

A story has developed over the last couple of weeks regarding Dana White, Sherdog.com, Managers Credentials, and Dana's Video Blog. Here's the condensed version with a little background: Years ago, Dana had a falling out with Sherdog.com, according to Dana, stemming from a disagreement over UFC DVD distribution. The UFC ended up pulling the credentials of Sherdog along with several other MMA websites. Since then, there has been tension between Sherdog and the UFC. Fast forward to April 1, 2009. Lorreta Hunt, the news editor of Sherdog.com published an article about how the UFC has limited backstage access to some fighters' managers. An irate Dana White responded to the article on his video blog which included the usual F-bombs as well as a "F***in F****t". The later insult outraged the gay and lesbian community and GLADD demanded an appology from Dana, which he issued, also on his Vlog. Sherdog.com issued their response to Dana's rant here. Dana has since done a couple of interviews where he addressed the incident including The Carmichael Dave Show where he states that he is no longer going to do the Video Blogs. He then went on TSN (Canada's version of ESPN) and fielded several direct questions regarding whether or not he thought he crossed the line. Fans have been begging Dana to continue witht he Vlogs and despite his previous statement to the contrary, he has done one Vlog since the incident.

TUF Contestants' Myspace and Facebook Friend Count

I’ve become more and more fascinated with how being on The Ultimate Figher affects a fighter’s popularity and fame, which in turn affect their pay, matchups, endorsements, etc. It’s difficult to accurately and statistically quantify a fighter’s increase of popularity, however I thought of one fairly simple way to do it: Myspace and Facebook. So for TUF 8, I decided to track the number of MySpace (and in a few cases, Facebook) friends each of the contestants had before the show aired and note the increase from week to week through the finale. It was very interesting to see the correlation between the increase in friends had with success and camera time on the show. Those who won their fights and had more camera time gained significantly more friends than those who lost early of had less than reality-show friendly personalities.

Here are a few comparisons from the start of TUF, Season 8 to the beginning of Season 9, about 8 months later:

Just getting on the show, however, doesn’t automatically mean your popularity will increase significantly. Those who lost their first fights in the house only showed an average friend increase of 322 compared to 1,461.9 for those who won. And it goes without saying that the bigger the personality, the bigger the increase in popularity as evidenced by Junie Browning’s significant lead on all of the other competitors. Love him or hate him, he obviously made an impact which translates into fan interest in watching him fight.

Now that TUF 9 has begun, I decided to again track the contestants’ increase in MySpace friends, however this season I’m including many more Facebook pages than last season. So far, here’s where they’re starting off:

Long Beach Fight Night 3 - Jan 4, 2009

Yesterday I had the opportunity to cover the Long Beach Fight Night. Unfortunately, I got there late and missed the first two fights and many of my pictures turned out blurry as I was getting used to a new camera.

It was a great event though with an even better turnout than last time. Only one fight went to a decesion, which happened to be one of the fights I missed, although there were a couple of bazzar endings. Here are some of the highlights:

Danny Juarez made quick work of Miles Howard with a RNC victory in round 1. Tony Fergeson defeated a visibly broken Frank Park by Arm Triangle and Darrell Montague punished Scott Brommage for nearly 3 rounds before finally finishing him via RNC.

Then the wierdness began. Jim Ramsey appeared to be putting up a good fight against a very game Maurice Eazel, even picking him up and tossing him to the canvas at one point. However, after Eazel took his turn and nearly threw Ramsey out of the ropes, Ramsey decided he had had enough and verbally quit.

The next fight took strange to the next level as both competitors stood and traded blows, Demetrice Woods reared back to through a punch and instead threw himself out of the ring. He was visibly in tremendous pain with an apparent shoulder dislocation and Keneti Faagata was awarded the victory via TKO.

The main event saw local favorite Thomas Kenney take a beating at the hands of Strikeforce verteran Jesse Juarez. Although the crowd was audibly pulling for Kenney, their support wasn't enough to help him defend Juarez's takedowns and superior ground game. While Kenny kept going for a dead-end Kimura, Juarez was able to take his back and eventually flatten him out and finish him with strikes.

Training Day with Dale Hartt

Last week I was invited by UFC fighter Dale Hartt to visit him in Las Vegas, film his workout routine and interview him as he prepares for his fight with Corey Hill at UFC Fight for the Troops on December 10, 2008 in North Carolina. I had to fly solo this time and forgot to bring a tape recorder so I wasn’t able to take the pictures of the event and take notes at the same time. Instead of a play-by-play, I’m just going to describe my experience at the California Extreme Fighting event on October 30, 2008.
The venue looked like a large dance hall that just might have been a bowling alley in a former life. The ring was located in the center of the sunken dance floor and there were food and drink services on upper level near the door that ran the length of the room. The fighters prepared for battle in the far corner behind a curtain, next to a mechanical bull.
The promoter was nice enough to get me a folding chair and I staked out a spot next to the judges stool opposite the fighter’s entrance ramp and the stage where the go-go dancers performed in between fights. I must admit that it was about what I expected from a small show in El Monte, CA. However, although the production had a few glitches (they never seemed to be able to get the spot light onto the fighters during their entrances in time), once the fights started, the action in the ring and the overall event did not disappoint.

Although it was challenging trying to capture the action while worrying about lighting, timing, angles and whether I remembered to turn the flash off on my brother-in-law’s digital SLR, every once in a while I would pause to watch the fight and appreciate the fact that I was actually leaning on the mat. At the end of the Grear-McDavitt fight, Toby Grear dropped McDavitt with a punch and pounced on him. The ref looked like he was going to step in so Grear backed off. However, when the ref hesitated and didn’t stop the fight, Toby kicked McDavitt in the side harder than I’ve ever seen anyone kicked, ever. The slap was so loud, it echoed through the entire hall.

Every fighter demonstrated heart and determination in their fight that really doesn’t come across when you watch MMA on TV or from the nose bleed seats (where I usually sit). This was my first time shooting from ring side and this experience gave me a whole new appreciation for the courage that these fighters have. Hearing the thud of each punch and the slap of each kick drives home the reality of the pain they suffer. Hearing them breathe and seeing the expressions on their faces in between rounds humanized the fighters. Smelling the B O of the corner-men was, well, just gross.

The most memorable moment of the night happened during the women’s fight. About half way through the Bagherdai-Hayes fight, my chair split like a wishbone and I found myself sitting on the floor. I heard a united “ooh” from the first few rows behind me, and then some giggles. Like a professional, I got up and continued taking pictures like nothing happened. I slid the chair underneath the curtain after the round ended and spent the rest of the night kneeling on my sweatshirt.
Notwithstanding my embarrassment, overall, the night was a great experience. The crowd was surprisingly respectful and the fights were exiting. Here are the results:

Ryan Rogers vs. Demetrice Woods
After Roger’s takedown attempts nearly lands both fighters out of the ring twice, Woods finally ends up on top and lays down some ground and pound before electing to stand. As they trade swings, a body kick by Rogers is caught by Woods who takes him down and wedges him into the corner where he achieves mount and attempts to strike from that position. Then, for some unknown reason, referee Cecil Peoples stands them up where they both swing for the fences.
Round 2 begins with Rogers dropping Woods with a punch and immediately goes to the mount and sets up an arm triangle. Woods is forced to tap at 31 seconds of round 2.

Tommy Lee vs. Marlin Gustafson
After a brief exchange, Lee shoots and takes Gustafson down. Gustafson goes for a leg and during the scramble, winds up on top. He eventually mounts, but is quickly rolled and Lee finishes the round punishing his opponent from the half guard. In round 2, the fight is up and down with Lee shooting for his second takedown only to fall prey to a Gustafson guillotine at 1:30.

Mitch Mellotti vs. Rick Jones
The entire fight was a kickboxing clinic thanks to Mr. Mellotti. By the end of the first round, Jones’ stomach and face were bright red as a result Mellotti’s body kicks, head kicks and punches. Jones’ valiant attempts to hang with Mellotti in round 2 were answered with a wicked head kick which dazed him. Mellotti then caught him with a flurry of punches and then put an exclamation point on it with a shin to the chin while his opponent was on his way down to the canvas. This one was all Mellotti, KO in 2:00 of round 2.

Cory Johnson vs. Vince Ortiz
Round one sees Ortiz take Johnson shoot a double only to land in a tight Johnson guillotine. Ortiz eventually escapes, drops some bombs and ends up mounted. Johnson rolls Ortiz and proceeds to drop elbows from the guard. Ortiz attempts a triangle only to get picked up over the head of his opponent. He lets go just before being slammed Rampage style and then goes for a guillotine. It was tight, but Johnson stuck it out was saved by the bell.
In round 2, Ortiz takes Johnson down and proceeds to drop bombs from his open guard. He eventually transitions to the mount. As Johnson attempts to bump his opponent off, Ortiz gets him in what looked from my angle like a school yard head lock. Johnson tapped at 1:44 of round 2 by what the announcer said was and armbar (It was an probably an Americana).

Raja Shippen vs. Chad Walter
Shippen starts out with a high kick and then moves to the clinch where he picks Walter up and throws him down like a rag doll. Shippen gets the mount but is quickly rolled and Walter ends up in his guard. Shippen manages to get up to his feet and get a body lock on Walter. It’s back and forth, up and down the entire round.
In round 2, they each trade kicks, but Walter catches Shippen’s leg and tosses him on the mat. Eventually, though, Shippen is able to take his back, transition to the mount and go for an arm triangle. Although Walter is able to escape the arm triangle and roll Shippen over, Shippen secures an armbar during the transition and forces a tap at 2:31 of the second round.

Justin Hubbell vs. Paul Karsky
Karsky starts out by throwing a kick and Hubbell heads straight for the clinch. He’s able to get the takedown and finds himself in a guillotine. After his head pops out Hubbell begins the GNP. After and unsuccessful armbar attempt, Karsky eventually gets the reversal and ends the round on top.
In round two, Karsky again begins with a kick. They clinch. Hubbell gets the takedown, moves to side mount, then mount, then he takes the back. However, Karsky is able to escape and ends up in his opponent’s guard. Now it’s Karsky’s turn to GNP. He stands up in the guard getting ready to throw bombs when Hubbard lands an up-kick and is eventually able to kick off his opponent and get to his feet. The round ends with Hubbard stuck in a tight guillotine and is saved by the bell.
In the last round, Karsky swings and misses with a slow-mo spinning back-fist. He clinches and Hubbell drags him down on top of him and starts working the rubber guard. Hubbell eventually passes his leg over Karsky’s shoulder and is working to cinch in the triangle while adding some strikes to his head. The bell rings and Hubbell is declared the winner, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 by UD.

Preston Scharf vs. Alex Rickards
This was a quick one. Leg kick, thai clinch, body lock, take down, ground and pound ref stoppage at 1:05 in the 1st. It was all Scharf.

Eric Castile vs. Maurice Eazel
After a brief exchange on the feet, Eazel went for double so Castile counters with a quillotine attempt. Eazel picks him up and carries him around the ring for a while till he finally decides to slam his opponent’s face into the canvas. Castile is still awake but lets go of the choke and ends up with Eazel in his guard. He attempts a triangle but Eazel escapes to his feet. Castile gets a takedown but Eazel reverses him and finishes the round in his opponent’s guard.
After the bell, Eazel pointed to the mat where Castile’s contact lens had fallen. Castile then spent the next couple of minutes trying to stick it back in his eye. It was really weird.
Anyways, round 2 begins with Eazel throwing a body kick, shooting a double and getting a slam. While on the bottom, Castile goes for a omaplata but Eazel escapes and eventually stands up. Eazel gets another slam and the round ends with Castile doing his best to land strikes from the bottom.
Round three begins with both fighters trading kicks and combos. Eazel picks Castile up over his shoulder and slams him yet again to the delight of the crowd. Castile spent most of this round on his back and Eazel picked up the unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27.

Dominic Verdugo vs. Marcus Ajian
Ajian opens up with a slam and a guillotine attempt. Verdugo is able to flip over and escape and eventually get to his feet and into a clinch. Verdugo then gets the takedown, only to get caught in another guillotine. This time he’s forced to tap at 1:50, round 1.

TUF 8 MySpace Experiment

I'm fascinated with how quickly fighters who are on "The Ultimate Fighter" reality show go from relative obscurity to fame in such a short time. I decided to figure out a way to measure just how quickly their fame and popularity increased as a result of the show and the only way I could think of was MySpace. Fighters use MySpace to connect with their fans. Some of the most popular fighters in the UFC have thousands of MySpace friends which allows them to reach out and communicate with all of them very efficiently. For example, Tito Ortiz has 156,027 friends, Chuck Liddell has 105,243 and Forrest Griffin has 93,887.

So before The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 aired, I did a search on MySpace to find each of the 32 contestants' MySpace. I noted how many friends each of them had at the beginning of the show and each week after the show airs, I'm tracking the increase of MySpace friends of each of the contestants (at least the ones that I could find). The fighters that I couldn't find on MySpace, I did a search on Facebook instead. Then I stayed up late one night and made a spread sheet which I posted on the web here.

Right now we are about half way through the season and the top three fighters with the greatest increase in MySpace friends are:

1. Krzysztof Soszynski 551 increase (Facebook group)
2. Junie Browning 484
3. Ryan Bader 384
